Amy Traylor: Sum of the Parts

January 1 - 31, 2005

Amy Traylor has taken photographs of students in her South Valley high school classroom in Albuquerque. She focuses on details such as hands, hair, or shoes, leaving the students mostly anonymous yet capturing gestures and expression.

About her work, the artist says, "this body of work gives birth to my obsession with the mystical assumption that the whole is more than the sum of the parts. With our scientific advancements in DNA decoding we now realize that human summation can be realized in the tiniest flake of skin. If only one cell can hold the essence of us, then what say our parts?"
