Gronk: BrainFlame and Ainadamar

July - August, 2005

This summer, the Los Angeles-based artist Gronk is involved in several projects in and around Albuquerque. On July 15, the world premiere of Gronk's BrainFlame, an animated piece created specifically for a domed theater environment, opens at LodeStar in Albuquerque. Gronk's BrainFlame was produced as a collaboration between Gronk, Los Angeles-based composer Steven LaPonsie, animator Hue Walker, and a number of students who worked on the animation through a program called the Digital Pueblo Project.

Gronk has also been working on the set design for the Santa Fe Opera production of Ainadamar, an opera about the life of Federico Garcia Lorca. An exhibition of sketches, models, and related materials from the opera design will be displayed at the National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum in Albuquerque July 9 through October 30.

Glass Brain and sketches by Gronk
This glass brain inspired the creation of Gronk's BrainFlame. It was created during Gronk's residency at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Washington, when he created a number of works in collaboration with the museum's glass blowing staff.
