The Harwood Art Center announces Transitions,
the sixteenth annual juried Albuquerque Contemporary
exhibition, which takes place August 6 - September
17, 2005 at 516 Artspace in Downtown Albuquerque.
The exhibition features 38 pieces by 27 local artists,
selected from 240 entries of more than 600 pieces.
The exhibition was juried by Laura Steward Heon, the
incoming executive director and curator of SITE Santa
Fe. Before starting her position at SITE Santa Fe
this spring, Heon was curator at MASS MoCA (the Massachusetts
Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams), one of
the worldÕs largest centers for contemporary visual
and performing arts. About the process of curating
the exhibition, Heon said ÒI saw at least three different
forms the show might take on, but the theme that struck
me and seemed to dominate many of the images I saw
is something I call ÒDesert DadaÓ; a very rich, quirky
kind of surrealism modified by a strong narrative
and black sense of humor.Ó

This
contemporary exhibition is the only one of its kind
in Albuquerque showcasing the city's wealth of contemporary
artists. The annual juried show has a long history
and has been presented in several different venues.
This year, the annual show is presented by the Harwood
Art Center, emphasizing the community driven aspect
of the exhibition and maintaining the focus on a broad
spectrum of contemporary art. The Harwood Art Center,
owned and operated by Escuela del Sol Montessori,
has been promoting the arts and education in Albuquerque
and New Mexico since 1991.
The
continuation of this annual exhibition demonstrates
that the power of art is strong and lives on through
changes in the community. The title Transitions has
been chosen to represent that this yearÕs show is
a stepping stone to the future, providing continuity
between previous exhibitions and the future of contemporary
art in Albuquerque.
The
exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated catalog
featuring an interview of Laura Steward Heon by arts
writer Kay Whitney, as well as statements by the artists
in the show.
This
exhibition is made possible in part by the McCune
Charitable Foundation, and is in conjunction with
an effort to increase arts activity in Downtown Albuquerque.
Other supporters include the FUNd at Albuquerque Community
Foundation, Wingspread Collector's Guide, John & Jamie
Lewinger, New Mexico Bank and Trust, REDW, Enterprise
Builders, Legacy Mortgage LLC, DCSW Architects, Page
Coleman Gallery, and Moise & Co.
